When it comes to car problems, very few things are as upsetting as finding out the engine as a whole is the problem. Once the mechanic gives you the news, you have a few options as to what to do. You may choose to have the unit repaired, have it rebuilt, or have it replaced. Before you make your decision, there are things you need to take into consideration.

The first thing to consider is the age and worth of the vehicle. Next, be honest with how you feel about the vehicle. Finally, ask for quotes for all three options. The answers to these questions will lead you to make the best option for the future of the vehicle and your transportation.

Vehicle Age
If the vehicle is 10 years old or older, the engine problem is probably going to be beyond a simple repair option. You could have the engine rebuilt, but the cost involved will need to be considered. If the cylinders or block need to be bored it can get quite expensive. When the block is compromised due to a broken crankshaft or rod, the only option is to replace the entire engine.

Your Feelings
When you have been thinking about getting a new vehicle anyway, a bad engine would be a good time to go with that feeling and start looking to buy one. However, finances may get in the way, making it necessary to work with a mechanic to get the current car operational again.

Some people form an attachment to a vehicle. This could be because it is the first one you owned, it was passed down from a family member, or it is a classic that has been restored. Only you can decide if you want to keep the vehicle for a personal reason and how much you are willing to spend to keep it.

Overall Cost
Even if you have your heart set on keeping the vehicle, you need to be realistic about how much it is going to cost to fix it. If the problem only requires a simple repair, you should consider that as it will be much less expensive than the other options. However, you should have a couple of different mechanics look things over so only the bad parts are fixed or replaced and you don't get charged for things that are working fine.

If the engine can be rebuilt, make sure you have a complete quote on what needs to be done and how much it will cost. You may be able to find an engine that will fit the vehicle at a salvage yard for less money even when you add the cost of installation. A completely rebuilt engine is as good as a new one as all the moving parts are replaced and the whole thing inspected to make sure it is good.
You should also ask if the shop will buy the current engine from you, rebuild it, and sell the rebuilt unit to someone else. You can use the money to purchase a new engine.

When rebuilding is not an option, you may choose to have a new engine installed. You may choose to purchase a rebuilt one to save money if one is available.
